The Garden of Caves was officially designated as a tourist spot in 2010; however, it’s still a hidden gem of Meghalaya. Enveloped with forests and hills, and home to tiny ponds and waterfalls, the place is truly experiential.

This cave is not only a tourist’s paradise but also historically significant for the Meghalaya natives. It originated thousands of years ago when the place received constant rainfall and water flow. The gushing speed of water turned the limestone rocks into a beautiful cave, which still holds securely.

For centuries, the local Khasi tribe has been using the cave as a sacred place for rituals. Earlier, they used it to hide from the British.

Today, the Garden of Caves has turned into one of the most popular and spiritual attractions in the village.

1. Sum Syiem Falls

The waterfall within the Garden of Caves drops from a high altitude and creates a crystal-clear pool of water at the bottom.  There’s a magical feeling as the water gushes through the age-old rocks. Walk close to the base and feel the cool mist passing across your cheeks.

2. Ka Synrang Syiem

The natural attraction is also called “King’s Cave” and holds historical prominence. Its entrance is created by huge rocks, and the cave in itself is quite deep and mysterious. There’s a narrow passage through which you can reach the chambers. According to folklore, these hidden chambers were used by ancient Khasi kings as a shelter.

3. Arsad Falls

Arsad is another popular fall in the cave, known for its powerful stream of water. As it gushes down, the fall divides into two streams, creating a magical experience for the visitors. A sight of the waterfall, blended with pleasant sunlight, turns your visit into a magical experience.

4. Ki Stieh Maw

The stone formation of the Ki Stieh Maw waterfall is a testament to the glory of nature. This place, “Ki Stieh Maw,” originates from its uncanny resemblance to the shields used during ancient battles. The peaceful sound of water and the tranquillity in the aura make it a must-visit for everyone.

5. Riat Umlwai Falls

Riat is the tallest waterfall in the Garden of Caves, and has derived its name from “Lwai honey bee”. Earlier, the bees used to build their hives along the waterfall cliffs and reside in the thick forest. The “Um” in the name relates to the honey produced by these bees.
